Microneedling

Microneedling is a highly sought-after skincare treatment known for its ability to rejuvenate the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. At Central Austin Dermatology and Aesthetics, medical professionals offer this safe and effective procedure to address wrinkles, scars, and other skin concerns without using heat or ablation. The process, also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), utilizes a device such as the SkinPen to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing process, leading to increased collagen and elastin, which improve the skin’s texture, tone, and elasticity for a more youthful appearance.

The Microneedling Procedure — How It Works

Microneedling involves the use of a pen-like device to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. These microscopic “injuries” initiate the wound healing cascade, stimulating the body’s natural healers—blood, serum, and lymph. This process enhances the skin’s ability to repair itself and absorb topical products such as creams, gels, and serums for superior results. For an added boost, microneedling can be combined with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), introducing growth factors that accelerate healing and promote skin rejuvenation.

Benefits of Microneedling

  • Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved skin tone and pigmentation
  • Diminished appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, and traumatic scars
  • A brighter, more youthful glow due to enhanced collagen production

What to Expect During the Procedure

Microneedling typically feels like a light sandpapering sensation. While certain areas of the skin may be more sensitive, the use of topical numbing cream and hydrating gels ensures the treatment is comfortable and virtually painless.

Recovery and Downtime

Patients can expect minimal downtime. Redness similar to a light sunburn may occur within the first 24–48 hours, with most people healing completely within 2–4 days. Sun avoidance is crucial during recovery, as is refraining from makeup and sunscreen for the first two days. Normal skincare routines can typically resume after this period.

Visible Results and Recommended Sessions

Results start to appear about a week after treatment and continue to improve over the next several months. Most patients require 3–4 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, though those with deeper scars or wrinkles may benefit from up to 6 sessions. When combined with other cosmetic treatments, results are further enhanced.
