What is a lip lift?
A lip lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the lips by shortening the distance between the nose and the upper lip. This procedure can create a more youthful and defined look by exposing more of the upper lip’s pink tissue and improving the overall shape and proportion of the lips.
Lip lift techniques
There are several types of lip lifts, including:
- Bullhorn (Subnasal) Lip Lift: The most common type, where a small strip of skin is removed from under the nose, lifting the center and sides of the upper lip.
- Corner Lip Lift: Elevates the corners of the mouth, ideal for those with downturned lips.
- Central Lip Lift: Focuses on lifting the center of the upper lip.
- Gullwing Lip Lift: Creates a more defined upper lip by making an incision along the lip border.
- Italian Lip Lift: Involves two small incisions at each nostril, providing a subtle lift
What to expect from your lip lift procedure
Preparation: Before the surgery, you’ll have a consultation with your plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and the best technique for you. You’ll receive specific instructions on how to prepare, such as avoiding certain medications and alcohol
Anesthesia: The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, so you’ll be awake but won’t feel any pain
Incision: The surgeon will make a small incision. This incision allows the surgeon to remove a small strip of skin
Lifting the Lip: The surgeon will then lift the upper lip by suturing the incision, which shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip, exposing more of the pink lip tissue
Closing the Incision: The incision is carefully closed with sutures, which are typically removed after about a week
- Recovery: The procedure usually takes about 1-2 hours. After the surgery, you might experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications. Most people can return to their normal activities within a week
