Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema is caused by a genetic abnormality, eczema is worsened by a damaged skin barrier and chronic inflammation in the skin.

What causes the itchy skin?

A hypersensitivity to allergens in the environment leads to overactive nerve stimulation. As a result, the skin itches. There is an imbalance between the natural oils and water in the skin. Plus, the skin does not have the correct amount of fatty acids. This means the skin barrier does not work properly to protect the body from the external environment.

Treatment for Eczema?

  • Eczema is not curable, but it is controllable.
  • If there is weeping or crusting, see your physician immediately for testing.
  • Consult a health care provider to assess which treatment options would work best for you.
  • Suggestions to improve eczema symptoms:
  • Apply a non-sensitizing cream 2-8 times daily, even if symptoms have decreased
  • Avoid temperature extremes
  • Maintain an anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant diet with a strong protein component
  • Supplements such as iron, flax, borage, and vitamin C & E may be beneficial
  • Green tea, oolong tea, curcumin, and daily probiotics may also be beneficial
  • Avoid caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, hot temperatures, spicy food, pain medications, and tea tree oil
  • Avoid jewelry made with nickel (costume jewelry)
  • Be mindful of “trigger points” in your homes such as plants, animals, and floor coverings (carpets)
  • Have air ducts cleaned every 6 months
  • Avoid allergens and irritants such as fragrance (perfume), preservatives, and chlorine
  • Wash clothes with fragrance-free detergents and repeat the rinse cycle
  • Do not use dryer sheets; use only fragrance-free softeners if desired
  • Take oral antihistamines at night to help the itching

I’ve been seeing Shirien Coover PA for several years. She puts me at ease, protecting my dignity and privacy during skin checks, and she is very soothing and as gentle as possible if/when she finds anything that requires removal. She also patiently answers my questions and genuinely wants me to understand the medical terminology. I also find their rates to be affordable and reasonable, which is rare and refreshing where health care costs are concerned.

This is the only place that I know of that you can be told that you have cancer, and be at peace about it – Courtney Scarmado and staff are that nice. Sounds weird, since getting bad news is never good. They are professional, and know all about skin and its care. Added bonus: after you get your face frozen off, you can walk over to Milk and Cookies and feel so much better!

I’m happy to say that Dr. Simi Cadmus and PA Courtney Scamardo are continuing Dr. Katherine Farady’s high standards of care and service. Good dermatologists are hard to find; I strongly recommend this entire practice.
