What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning or ear reshaping, is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size, or position of the ears. It can be used to treat a variety of ear deformities, including:
- Prominent ears:Otoplasty is primarily used to correct protruding ears, also known as prominuaris.
- Misshapen ears:Otoplasty can rebuild ears that are damaged or misshapen.
- Large ears:Otoplasty can reduce the size of large ears.
- Earlobes:Otoplasty can alter large or stretched earlobes, or lobes with wrinkles or large creases.
- Congenital conditions:Otoplasty can correct defects that are present from birth.
- Trauma:Otoplasty can correct defects caused by injury.
- Missing ears:Otoplasty can build new ears for people who were born without them or lost them through injury.
During the procedure, a surgeon makes incisions in the inner creases of the ears or on the backs of the ears. They then reshape the cartilage framework of the ear using permanent sutures.
